Periodontal Disease

​Healthy gums enhance the appearance of your teeth, like a frame around a beautiful painting. Periodontal disease is another name for gum disease.

​The word periodontal literally means “around the tooth. “Gum disease begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) produces toxins that cause the gums to become inflamed, turn red, swell and bleed easily.

​These are reversible gum inflammations.
These inflammations are caused by the presence of an accumulation of "dental plaque" in contact with the gums.
These inflammations depend on the quality of dental hygiene.

​The periodontal disease

• Notice any symptoms of periodontal disease (bleeding or receding gums, bad breath, etc.) although symptoms are often not present at all.
  
  
• Have heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease or osteoporosis.
  
  
• Have a family member with periodontal disease.
  
  
• Have a sore or irritation in your mouth that does not get better within two weeks.
  ​
  
• Have dental problems that might benefit from enhanced hygiene/cleaning.

Non surgical periodontal treatment 

​​The health of the gums is extremely important, as they provide a foundation for the teeth. If the gums are decayed or compromised, and left untreated, tooth decay and tooth loss can result.

Periodontal diseases  are infections that originate from bacteria, and/or parasites and/or viruses which induce an inflammation that causes destruction of these tissues.
